Since joining Tone It Up a few months ago, I’ve been absolutely blown away by the support, encouragement, and sense of community that makes TIU so special. It’s not just a nutrition plan or workout guide, it’s a whole community of like-minded girls on the road to being the best version of themselves, together. There is really nothing else like it! (Unless there’s some kind of virtual fitness sorority somewhere out there…)? Heheh. While I don’t follow the plan strictly– mainly due to dietary restrictions and my preference for Pilates– I’ve incorporated the basic lifestyle principles and love being a member of the TIU community.
I was so excited to find TIU Motivational Mail- it’s like a fitness pen pal program for grown ups! TIU Motivational Mail is voluntarily organized and put together by a member, Jessie, who randomly matches you up with another TIU girl to get to know and encourage throughout the month. Towards the end of the month, you get to exchange packages full of your favorite health and fitness stuff or things you think your partner would love. (I think I may have mentioned that I love gift buying/making/giving before?! ) And duh…getting surprise packages in the mail is just as fun!
This was my first month taking part, and it was awesome! It was so much fun making a new friend on the East Coast and sharing support throughout the month. My partner even got engaged over Thanksgiving!! I sent her a box full of my favorite snacks (like chia packs and Coco Cafe- she’s a coffee addict!), beauty products (like EOS and bath salts for muscle tension), and fun stuff like socks and paper straws. And then I came back from Thanksgiving to my cute package with some of her favorite things like festive cozy socks, a sports tumbler, and Starbucks card!
Thanks so much Meredith, and congrats on your engagement!
Happy December! It’s 80 degrees here but the holiday season has officially arrived anyway. The Christmas decorations are coming out in full force, and I’m ready to start wrapping up those presents I bought months ago (because I’m an obsessive gift giver) and cuddling up with Christmas movies. It’s hard not to be extra thankful around Thanksgiving time, and as always I have a lot to be thankful for! It seems like once you’re out of college, going home for Thanksgiving has a totally different feel. I can’t describe it, but it’s just different somehow. It was so nice to catch up with friends and get to see my grandparents; and it was wonddderrrful to have such a long weekend. I’m so sore from Thanksgiving day football (first annual Turkey Bowl was awesome!) and Saturday’s early morning hot yoga, but it felt good to be active while back home! It was certainly an exhausting weekend, but I’m looking forward to a full and fun fresh month ahead!
My week in pictures:
My roommate is getting into waffle art. Gobble gooble turkey waffles!
Stacked necklaces, the beaded one made for me by a dear friend!
Getting cozy with tea and Christmas mags
The best travel snacks- Harmless Harvest Coconut Water (mine was pink, yay for extra antioxidants!) and Lara Bars.
The girls at our First Annual Turkey Bowl! I tried my best not to disappoint our team and ended up grabbing a flag AND successfully blocking. So much fun!Da Best picked me up Saturday morning for early hot yoga and Urth. I felt dizzy and barfy after yoga but it was well worth the amazing 30 second massage from the instructor, who was somehow a perfect combo of spazzy and soothing. This time at Urth I got a caramel blended boba with almond milk and caramelized banana nut oatmeal with almond milk. Just. so. good.
Cheers to a new month! What are you looking forward to?
This superfood super fall salad makes for a perfect Thanksgiving side salad or even take-along lunch. Because kale is so sturdy, it can be made ahead of time and actually tastes best after a night or two marinating in the fridge. If you’re anything like me, you’re already thinking about Thanksgiving leftovers- and I plan on stuffing a little turkey + this salad into a whole grain tortilla for a delicious wrap! Whether you’re having a vegetarian Thanksgiving or just need a healthy first course, this salad is filled with festive fall flavors.
Do yourself a favor and massage the kale beforehand to make the texture softer and a little more palatable. I had fig balsamic on hand so I used that and it was delicious, but a simple vinaigrette would be just as great!
Kale Cinnamon Apple Pecan Salad with Fig Vinaigrette
1 bunch kale
2 apples, chopped in chunks
1/2 cup pecans
1/2 cup cranberries
1 tbsp cinnamon
- Wash and massage kale, pat dry. Strip leaves off of stalks and rip or cut into bite-sized pieces and add to a large mixing bowl.
- In a separate bowl, add apple chunks and cinnamon. Squeeze half of lemon over bowl, and mix to get the apples coated with cinnamon.
- Dump apples into kale; add pecans and cranberries.
- In a small bowl, make a simple vinaigrette, mixing equal parts balsamic and olive oil, with a touch of mustard to combine.
- Pour dressing on salad, squeeze remaining half of lemon, and toss!
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and long weekend!
It’s a beautiful Sunday! Normally I can’t stand being stuck in the house on Sundays, but right now I’m enjoying being cozied up with a blanket and almond milk iced coffee. I just got back from a Pilates ass-whooping and the farmer’s market- my favorite Sunday ritual.
I’m feeling extra thankful for my true friends and family lately. Mini catch-ups with some of my dearest friends this week just completely warmed my heart. Friends that genuinely support and want the best for me. Friends that don’t judge. Friends I know I will be friends with forever, no matter how much time has passed.
It’s been a productive weekend but there’s still lots left to do. Cheers to a wonderful (Thanksgiving) week ahead! I’m getting excited for muddy morning flag football with friends, chowin’ down, baking, and a lil SNL marathon with family.
(PS- This guy knows just the right time to send a funny meme)
Another week down and another week closer to December. I’m not in the holiday spirit yet, though Pinterest seems to think so! However, this is the first year that I actually have a small list of things I’m going to try to score online through Black Friday weekend deals. Some of the items I’m going to buy anyway, I just figured I would wait to see if I can get a deal, and the rest is stuff I’ll only get if there is a good deal (like silk pillowcases, new juicer, etc). Ya know, the necessities.
There were a lot of ups and downs, though it was a pretty quiet week. Once I could resume exercise I went back to Pilates only to find I lost all of my strength (in less than a week!). Okay not really, but it was haaaard. Then I went balls to the wall (no lie) in Whole Foods immediately after for some retail therapy. Yep, apparently grocery store retail therapy is a thing. #Noregrets though because the shit I bought was delicious. All kinds of tea, bars, specialty drinks, and Califia Farms Almond Milk Cold Brew was finally stocked!
I also signed a few online petitions to bring almond milk to Starbucks. Just doing my part to Be The Change. Baha. The weekend was more eventful as I went up to Newport and we hit up hole in the wall Eat Chow (again), tha dolla theatre (Rush, which I actually really enjoyed) and finally Haute Cakes for Seaworth Coffee (and hot cakes, duh). I stumbled upon Seaworth Coffee on Instagram and when I saw they served it at Haute Cakes I made a mental note, otherwise known as: I took a screen shot to reference at a later date. Well this Sunday was the date and boy was it gerrrrd. I had the cold brew with almond milk and their coconut syrup to go with my blueberry oat hot cakes and eggs. The place is perfect for a casual Sunday morning., and reminded me I haven’t been to The Cottage in ages. And guess what? Seaworth is coming to San Diego County Whole Foods’ soon which means more options for my Whole Foods hauls!
Yikes. Okay. Have a great week, friends.
Happy hump day! As I’m coming to terms with the realization that I am and always will be a product junkie, I wanted to share five of my latest favorites that make it oh-so-easy to get through the mid-week slump. These products are self-tested as instant mood-boosters!1. The Body Shop Coconut Body Milk. I think spray lotion is the best thing to ever happen to busy people with dry skin! This body milk smells light and delicious and absorbs quickly while still providing deep moisture. A few spritzes post shower and you’re good to go!
2. NYX Tea Tree Blotting Paper. These should really always be a staple in my purse but since I’ve been using just a gentle cleanser this week (in case any accidentally gets in my eye post LASIK) I’ve been oilier than usual. These do the trick to get you feelin’ fresh.
3. Urban Outfitter’s head wrap. Got this baby on sale for $4.99! It’s been great for those messy (let’s be real, dirty) hair days, and it’s comfy too!
4. Library of Flowers Eau de Parfum in Wildflower & Fern. I picked up this small batch perfume bottled by Margot Elena in Portland and am obsessed with the intoxicating but light citrusy, cucumbery scent. The only reason I don’t wear this everyday is because I don’t want to run out too fast!
5. Julep Freedom Polymer Top Coat & Chloe polish. I love love love Julep polish because it’s 4-free, smells like green apples, and comes in so many gorgeous colors! Once you become a Maven it’s a little hard to stop shopping because they offer so many great discounts on top of the monthly program. Chloe is a frosty cocoa color that is just perfect for fall.
What are your current favorites?
Friday night my mom picked me up from the train station and we went to Tranquil Tea Lounge for the first time. There were sooo many good teas to choose from that we each ordered a flight of three teas….a total of six teapots! My favorites were Bora Bora, Candied Pear, and Smores. We’ll definitely be going back for more.
While Friday night was nice and relaxing, the rest of this week was hectic and packed with annoying but necessary errands (flu shot, blood work, apple store, eyebrows, and chores galore) plus other stuff like pilates, babysitting, and my roommate’s work event. At least I didn’t even have time to be exhausted? On top of that, I was wearing my headache-inducing glasses 24/7 because…..yesterday was my LASIK procedure! I’ll do a whole separate post on the LASIK (and how I paid for it with Groupon) because let’s be real….IT’S LIFE CHANGING! Okay, so I’m only one day post-op, but I can already tell it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. That’s not to say that the procedure didn’t suck…just that it was worth it :) To sweeten the deal, the office I went to was just ten minutes from Urth Cafe. So we went for lunch pre-procedure (though sadly I had to avoid caffeine) and then again for breakfast this morning after my post-op. I’ve been several times for lunch but this was my first breakfast venture. Let me just say….the bread pudding with caramelized bananas and steamed almond milk is one of the best things I’ve ever eaten!!! (And the Sunday breakfast atmosphere is much more relaxed than the crazy lunchtime scene).
I have to wear sunglasses 24/7, use special eyedrops, sleep in some really chic plastic googles and avoid eye makeup for the next two weeks so I hope they go by as fast as this one did! Have an awesome week, friends!
Have any of you had LASIK done? I would love to hear your experience!!
